I have said, to friends and in a couple of comments on some Blogs, that the choice of Gov. Palin as Sen. McCain's running mate is an excellent political strategy and a game-changer for the general election season. The GOP gets to claim a portion of this historic election by having their first woman on the ticket and it has at least two other benefits for the McCain campaign. First, it gives the Hillary voters that remain adverse to Obama a woman to vote for and second, it bolsters the McCain campaign's image as reformers.
It is also, however, a sheer political move and has nothing to do with actually governing the country. Gov. Palin has been the mayor of a small (very small, really) town in Alaska and then Governor of Alaska - population less than that of San Francisco - for less than two years. I have to ask the question, is this person really the absolute best that the Republican Party has to offer America? Not is this the best woman we can get on the ticket, but is this individual really and truly the best and brightest that the GOP has to choose from for the second-highest office in the land and to be a heartbeat away from leadership of the free world. If this is seriously the best they've got, the GOP is in a world of hurt. The sad part is that it just might work!
Americans in general do not pay enough attention to their government and it is getting worse. Let me just say that any Hillary voter that refuses to vote for Obama &/or is voting for McBush so that Hillary can run again in 2012 is voting only for the 'woman' and not for the issues that the woman represents - this is just stupid! How in the world can any woman that supported Hillary now say they are voting McBush? The two candidates have opposite positions on most of the major issues that are supposed to be important to women.
McBush and the GOP faithful are hoping that they can just repeat a few hot-button phrases over and over (a noun, a verb and P.O.W.) and throw a few red-herring 'issues' out there on local ballots (gay-marriage, gun rights, etc.) to get the base into the voting booth. While they are in there voting to trample on the rights of fellow Americans (gay Americans, but Americans none-the-less) they'll take an extra second to vote for the GOP ticket. They wouldn't get out of their chair to vote for McBush, but with the 'fire-up-the-base' issue on the local ballot they can get their faithful to turn out.
Americans need to pay attention and stop being sheep. Wake-up and take your country back, people!!
